Presentation outlining the foundations
charitable activities.
Oksana Prociuk (President and CEO of
Buduchnist Credit Union) presented BCU
Foundation’s growth since its inception in 2004.
“We are particularly proud of the fact that we
are the only Ukrainian-Canadian financial
institution to establish its own charitable
foundation-BCU Foundation.” she stated.

Bohdan Leshchyshen, Chair of Board of
Directors of BCU Foundation expressed his thanks
for the tremendous community support, which
allowed the Foundation to provide sponsorship
for a wide array of Canadian initiatives,
including: charity fundraisers, student
scholarships, concerts, youth camps, cultural
festivals, international art exhibitions,
scholarly publications, genocide-awareness
projects, senior's support services, and
countless other community-based activities.
To recognize those who initiated funds within
the Foundation, Bohdan Leshchyshen, presented
each with a bronze “Hutcul with trembita” by
artist Oleh Lesiuk.

Buduchnist supported the Ukrainian Canadian
Professional and Business Association of
Toronto’s annual Yalynka celebration held on
December 17 which included networking
opportunities, wine tasting, and traditional
carol singing.
Buduchnist helped ring
in the New Year at 2012 Malanka celebrations of
the PLAST Ukrainian youth organization at the
Liberty Grand and the Traditional Malanka of the
Ukrainian Cultural Centre in Toronto, featuring
the talented musicians of Zbruch.

On December 17, 2011, the President of the
Ukrainian World Congress (UWC), Eugene Czolij,
met in Toronto with members of the Board of
Directors of Buduchnist Credit Union.
After
participating in a meeting which discussed the
UWC’s initiatives planned for the upcoming year,
Buduchnist Board members Andrew Tarapacky, Orest
Kostruba, and Oleh Romanyshyn presented a cheque
in the amount of $15,000 in support of the UWC.

Re-Opening
BCU Financial Groups’ Ottawa branch re-opened
its newly renovated doors on Tuesday, November
29. The evening began with the traditional
presentation of bread and salt by Ottawa’s
Svitanok dancers greeting guests, including
Etobicoke Centre Member of Parliament, Ted
Opitz, community leaders, BCU members and BCU
staff.

Oksana Prociuk (BCU CEO), Ron Tomosk (BCU
Ottawa Advisory Committee Chair), Ted Opitz
(MP), Nadia Dubik (Ottawa Branch Manager), Orest
Kostruba (BCU Board Member), officially re-open
the branch by cutting the blue BCU ribbon.

Past chairman of the board, Theodosij Buyniak
and Ron Tomosk, Ottawa Advisory Committee Chair,
presented an award to Emil Senyshyn for his many
years of service at Buduchnist, as a branch
manager and Advisory Board member and active
member of the Ukrainian-Canadian community in
Ottawa.

At the re-opening reception, the Akord male
choir from Ottawa entertained guests with their
wonderful melodious voices. Nadia Dubik and Olya
Katruszenko prepared a wonderful reception for
all attendees.

We thank everyone for their continued support
of BCU! We wish the Ottawa Branch successes in
their newly renovated home!
4th Annual Member
Appreciation Evening in Hamilton
On November 20, Hamilton branch hosted their
4th Annual Member Appreciation Evening. Branch
Manager, Stefania Barrios, welcomed guests to
the festive occasion held at the Ukrainian
Cultural Centre in Hamilton. Guests were
entertained by the musical talents of Adam
Timoon, celebrated BCU’s financial successes,
our generous community sponsorship, and our
expanding services, such as BCU Wealth
Management and BCU Insurance Services.

demonstrate their musical talents
The traditional genre of Ukrainian musical
entertainment known as “Vechornytsi” was
organized again this year by the League
of Ukrainian Canadian Women Toronto Branch.
The performance, entitled “Khata z kraiu” (The
House on the Corner), took place at the
Ukrainian Cultural Centre in Toronto and
featured traditional Ukrainian dress, food and
music. This festive event included dinner, a
musical show and dance. Buduchnist was the main
sponsor of the evening, and our employees were a
vital part of the show’s organization and
performance

BCU at Dzerelo Fundraiser
Buduchnist Credit Union, a member of BCU
Financial Group, was proud to be the Presenting
Sponsor of the latest Dishing for Dzerelo event
held on November 6th in Toronto. This year’s
celebrity chef cook-off was called “Not Your
Baba’s Borshch!” and had over 200 guests in
attendance. In addition to the gourmet borshch
competition, a three-course lunch was prepared
by Anne Yaremowich, Executive Chef at the Art
Gallery of Ontario. Proceeds from the fundraiser
benefitted the Dzerelo Children’s Rehabilitation
Centre in Lviv, Ukraine.

thanks from Edmonton-based Verkhovyna Ensemble

Recently, Buduchnist Credit
Union received a wonderful thank you letter from
the President of the Ukrainian Youth
Association’s Verkhovyna Song and Dance Ensemble
from Edmonton, Oksana Iwashko. Buduchnist was
the lead corporate sponsor of the ensemble’s
trip to Toronto to perform at the Toronto
Ukrainian Festival this past summer. The group’s
landmark show “The Letter”, commemorated the 120
anniversary of Ukrainian immigration to Canada.

Buduchnist Shines at the Toronto Ukrainian
Festival!
This year’s Bloor West Village Toronto
Ukrainian Festival, held during the weekend of
September 16-18, saw Buduchnist Credit Union
(BCU) acting as a leading sponsor at the
Festival. In fact, BCU was the Lead Corporate
Sponsor of the Ukrainian Youth Association’s
Verkhovyna Song and Dance Ensemble from
Edmonton, which performed their landmark show
“The Letter”, which tells the 120-year story of
Ukrainian settlement in Canada.

coffee, and unique blue-and-yellow doughnuts.

After the parade, Buduchnist Credit Union
hosted a VIP reception with festival performers,
including the Verkhovyna Song and Dance
Ensemble, Akord men’s choir from Ottawa,
community leaders and special guests. Each
member of the Verkhovyna Song and Dance Ensemble
received a silver trident pendant, which is a
tradition at Buduchnist for special guests. The
Verkhovyna Ensemble’s Choir Director, Halyna
Lazurko, presented BCU’s CEO, Oksana Prociuk and
BCU Chairman, Michael Szepetyk with a print
commemorating the group’s show “The Letter”.

Among those joining the celebrations, were
Conservative MPP Gerry Martyniuk (second from
the left), the architect of Bill 155 known as
Ontario’s Ukrainian Heritage Day Act.

Buduchnist staff celebrate Ukraine's
Independence Day
On Wednesday, August 24, 2011
Buduchnist Credit Union staff joined hundreds of
Ukrainians at the annual Ukrainian Flag Raising Ceremony
at the Provincial Legislative Building grounds - Queen’s Park in honour of Ukraine’s 20th
anniversary of Independence.
The League of Ukrainian Canadians, the League of
Ukrainian Canadian Women and the Ukrainian Youth
Association of Canada annually organize this
ceremony with Canadian Members of Parliament, Members of
Provincial Parliament and community leaders as
guest speakers.
It is on this day, August
24th in 1991 that Ukraine
proclaimed its’
Independence.

Independence Day

BCU Foundation Inaugural
Golf Tournament
BCU Foundation held their inaugural golf
tournament on Tuesday August 9th at Dragon’s
Fire golf club in Carlisle, Ontario to raise
funds for the newly created fund "Hallmark of
Excellence Fund". The fund promotes athletic
excellence, sportsmanship, and fair play in a
spirit of friendship, by supporting
not-for-profit organizations that use sports to
strengthen Ukrainian identity in Canada and
around the world. The fund will also support
Ukrainian-Canadian athletes who excel in various
sports and who compete in Canada and
internationally.
BCU Foundation would like to thank all

“She Paid the Ultimate Price” is a feature
documentary, which chronicles a journey of
discovery undertaken by Iryna Korpan to uncover
the tragic fate of her grandmother in Western
Ukraine during the Holocaust.

The true story about a Ukrainian woman—
Kateryna Sikorska, a widow and mother of three
small children, who saved her Jewish neighbors
and subsequently fell victim to the Nazis. Her
name is among the thousands of names forever
engraved on the Wall of Righteous Among the
Nations at Yad Vashem in Israel.

BCU Foundation and Buduchnist Credit Union
are proud to be the Lead Sponsors of the Taras
Shevchenko Monument in Ottawa, which was
unveiled in our national’s capital on June 26,
2011.

List of founders and patrons of the monument
Taras Shevchenko is a famous Ukrainian poet,
artist and humanist. As the national hero of
Ukraine, it was appropriate to unveil this
monument in 2011, the 20th anniversary of
Ukraine’s independence and the 120th anniversary
of Ukrainian settlement in Canada.
This
is the third Shevchenko monument to be erected
in Canada.
World famous Canadian sculptor Leo
Mol (Leonid Molodozhanyn) donated a series of
four of his sculptures to stand as a unified
monument to Taras Shevchenko.

Many guests from Ukraine and Canada were
present at the unveiling of the monument.
Ottawa branch employees Olya Katruszenko and
Nadia Dubik (member of the building committee)
proudly represented Buduchnist at the unveiling
of the monument.

Kipiani, journalist, historian, and
editor-in-chief of the Istorychna Pravda website
on Tuesday June 28.

On June 28th, the Etobicoke-Mississauga
branches of the League of Ukrainian Canadians
and of Ukrainian Canadian Women hosted a
screening of a documentary on the campaign of
harassment launched by Ukrainian government
officials against historian Roman Krutsyk, Head
of the Kyiv-based Memorial Society. A
question-and-answer session with guest speaker
Mr. Kipiani and reception followed.

Kret, delivered opening remarks.
Mr. Kipiani discussed the state of the freedom
of speech, freedom of press and the political
climate in Ukraine. Mr. Kipiani familiarized
himself with the work of the Ukrainian diaspora;
since his arrival in Canada only last week he
has already received new acquisitions to his
newspaper collection which already exceeds
18,000 items.

Vice-President of the
League of Ukrainian Canadian Women National
Executive, Lesia Shymko, moderated the evening
and presented Mr. Kipiani with a collection of
films produced by the various diaspora
organizations, as well as silver tryzub pendant
from Buduchnist Credit Union.

Spring is time for Matura, a very beautiful
Ukrainian tradition, a celebration of
graduates. Matura is a graduation gala for all
Ukrainian Saturday Heritage school program
graduates of the Greater Toronto Area.
Throughout the years these students have studied Ukrainian language, history, literature and
traditions. Not only do students learn together
but they make friends for life.

Buduchnist supports SUSK Congress
This year SUSK, The Ukrainian Canadian
Students Union held their 53rd National Congress
in Ottawa. Damian Snih, financial specialist,
at Buduchnist Credit Union Ottawa branch, held a
short seminar for the students regarding BCU
Scholarships and Conquest Account (18‑25 years). Buduchnist
was a Platinum sponsor of the Congress and also
provided each student attendee with a USB memory
stick.

The Pier 21 project, initiated by the League
of Ukrainian Canadian Women, is to collect
archival information about the post WWII third
wave of immigration to Canada from Ukraine.
The fundraising banquet “Celebrate Pier 21”
held on April 30, 2011 was attended by many
distinguished guests, Canadian politicians,
community leaders and members of the Ukrainian
Canadian community.
Chrysytna Bidiak, past president of the
League of Ukrainian Canadian Women opened the
evening’s festivities outlining the project.

Throughout the evening dancers, Barvinok
School of Dance and the Desna Dance Company
charmed attendees with their phenomenal dances.


The music of the Ukrainian Youth Association
Youth Ensemble Prolisok, bandurist Borys
Ostapienko, and Tenor Andrij Bilan created a
magical atmosphere.


Guests were also entertained by the famous
Ukrainian Canadian comedian, Luba Goy, who
shared her experiences of passing through Pier
21.

The evenings festivities truly paid homage to
all of those who came through Pier 21 and had an
impact on our Ukrainian Canadian community.

25th anniversary commemoration of
the Chornobyl catastrophe
On April 16th
2011, the L.A. Olijnyk theatre group in
Toronto
under the direction of Larys Bajus and Halyna
Czechowska, performed exerts from Kateryna
Motyl’s novel
«Політ журавлів над нетолоченими травами»
The moving performance gave
a voice to the tragic events which unfolded
during the catastrophic explosion of reactor
number four in Chornobyl,
Ukraine
on April 26, 1986.
We are grateful that

sponsored the event, which will continue to
provide a medium for the stories of this
horrific event.
