BCU Foundation Luncheon

Thursday, December 15, 2011 BCU Foundation invited members of BCU to a Luncheon Presentation outlining the foundations charitable activities.

Oksana Prociuk (President and CEO of Buduchnist Credit Union) presented BCU Foundation’s growth since its inception in 2004. “We are particularly proud of the fact that we are the only Ukrainian-Canadian financial institution to establish its own charitable foundation-BCU Foundation.” she stated.

Bohdan Leshchyshen, Chair of Board of Directors of BCU Foundation expressed his thanks for the tremendous community support, which allowed the Foundation to provide sponsorship for a wide array of Canadian initiatives, including: charity fundraisers, student scholarships, concerts, youth camps, cultural festivals, international art exhibitions, scholarly publications, genocide-awareness projects, senior's support services, and countless other community-based activities.

To recognize those who initiated funds within the Foundation, Bohdan Leshchyshen, presented each with a bronze “Hutcul with trembita” by artist Oleh Lesiuk.

Buduchnist supports our community at Christmas

As Canada’s largest Ukrainian-Canadian financial institution, Buduchnist continues to help our community preserve its Christmas traditions.

Buduchnist supported the Ukrainian Canadian Professional and Business Association of Toronto’s annual Yalynka celebration held on December 17 which included networking opportunities, wine tasting, and traditional carol singing.

Buduchnist helped ring in the New Year at 2012 Malanka celebrations of the PLAST Ukrainian youth organization at the Liberty Grand and the Traditional Malanka of the Ukrainian Cultural Centre in Toronto, featuring the talented musicians of Zbruch.

BCU Supports our Diaspora throughout the World

On December 17, 2011, the President of the Ukrainian World Congress (UWC), Eugene Czolij, met in Toronto with members of the Board of Directors of Buduchnist Credit Union.
After participating in a meeting which discussed the UWC’s initiatives planned for the upcoming year, Buduchnist Board members Andrew Tarapacky, Orest Kostruba, and Oleh Romanyshyn presented a cheque in the amount of $15,000 in support of the UWC.

Ottawa Branch: Grand Re-Opening

BCU Financial Groups’ Ottawa branch re-opened its newly renovated doors on Tuesday, November 29. The evening began with the traditional presentation of bread and salt by Ottawa’s Svitanok dancers greeting guests, including Etobicoke Centre Member of Parliament, Ted Opitz, community leaders, BCU members and BCU staff.

Oksana Prociuk (BCU CEO), Ron Tomosk (BCU Ottawa Advisory Committee Chair), Ted Opitz (MP), Nadia Dubik (Ottawa Branch Manager), Orest Kostruba (BCU Board Member), officially re-open the branch by cutting the blue BCU ribbon.

Past chairman of the board, Theodosij Buyniak and Ron Tomosk, Ottawa Advisory Committee Chair, presented an award to Emil Senyshyn for his many years of service at Buduchnist, as a branch manager and Advisory Board member and active member of the Ukrainian-Canadian community in Ottawa.

At the re-opening reception, the Akord male choir from Ottawa entertained guests with their wonderful melodious voices. Nadia Dubik and Olya Katruszenko prepared a wonderful reception for all attendees.

We thank everyone for their continued support of BCU! We wish the Ottawa Branch successes in their newly renovated home!

4th Annual Member Appreciation Evening in Hamilton

On November 20, Hamilton branch hosted their 4th Annual Member Appreciation Evening. Branch Manager, Stefania Barrios, welcomed guests to the festive occasion held at the Ukrainian Cultural Centre in Hamilton. Guests were entertained by the musical talents of Adam Timoon, celebrated BCU’s financial successes, our generous community sponsorship, and our expanding services, such as BCU Wealth Management and BCU Insurance Services.

Buduchnist staff demonstrate their musical talents

The traditional genre of Ukrainian musical entertainment known as “Vechornytsi” was organized again this year by the League of Ukrainian Canadian Women Toronto Branch. The performance, entitled “Khata z kraiu” (The House on the Corner), took place at the Ukrainian Cultural Centre in Toronto and featured traditional Ukrainian dress, food and music. This festive event included dinner, a musical show and dance. Buduchnist was the main sponsor of the evening, and our employees were a vital part of the show’s organization and performance

BCU at Dzerelo Fundraiser

Buduchnist Credit Union, a member of BCU Financial Group, was proud to be the Presenting Sponsor of the latest Dishing for Dzerelo event held on November 6th in Toronto. This year’s celebrity chef cook-off was called “Not Your Baba’s Borshch!” and had over 200 guests in attendance. In addition to the gourmet borshch competition, a three-course lunch was prepared by Anne Yaremowich, Executive Chef at the Art Gallery of Ontario. Proceeds from the fundraiser benefitted the Dzerelo Children’s Rehabilitation Centre in Lviv, Ukraine.

Buduchnist Credit Union donated $5,000 towards this worthy cause.

Buduchnist earns words of thanks from Edmonton-based Verkhovyna Ensemble

Recently, Buduchnist Credit Union received a wonderful thank you letter from the President of the Ukrainian Youth Association’s Verkhovyna Song and Dance Ensemble from Edmonton, Oksana Iwashko. Buduchnist was the lead corporate sponsor of the ensemble’s trip to Toronto to perform at the Toronto Ukrainian Festival this past summer. The group’s landmark show “The Letter”, commemorated the 120 anniversary of Ukrainian immigration to Canada.

Buduchnist Shines at the Toronto Ukrainian Festival!

This year’s Bloor West Village Toronto Ukrainian Festival, held during the weekend of September 16-18, saw Buduchnist Credit Union (BCU) acting as a leading sponsor at the Festival. In fact, BCU was the Lead Corporate Sponsor of the Ukrainian Youth Association’s Verkhovyna Song and Dance Ensemble from Edmonton, which performed their landmark show “The Letter”, which tells the 120-year story of Ukrainian settlement in Canada.

In keeping with recent tradition, Buduchnist staff handed out free European pampushky, coffee, and unique blue-and-yellow doughnuts. Special thanks to Tim Horton’s for their Ukrainian-themed custom-made doughnuts.

After the parade, Buduchnist Credit Union hosted a VIP reception with festival performers, including the Verkhovyna Song and Dance Ensemble, Akord men’s choir from Ottawa, community leaders and special guests. Each member of the Verkhovyna Song and Dance Ensemble received a silver trident pendant, which is a tradition at Buduchnist for special guests. The Verkhovyna Ensemble’s Choir Director, Halyna Lazurko, presented BCU’s CEO, Oksana Prociuk and BCU Chairman, Michael Szepetyk with a print commemorating the group’s show “The Letter”.

Buduchnist staff celebrate Ukraine's Independence Day

On Wednesday, August 24, 2011 Buduchnist Credit Union staff joined hundreds of Ukrainians at the annual Ukrainian Flag Raising Ceremony at the Provincial Legislative Building grounds - Queen’s Park in honour of Ukraine’s 20th anniversary of Independence. The League of Ukrainian Canadians, the League of Ukrainian Canadian Women and the Ukrainian Youth Association of Canada annually organize this ceremony with Canadian Members of Parliament, Members of Provincial Parliament and community leaders as guest speakers.

It is on this day, August 24th in 1991 that Ukraine
proclaimed its’ Independence.

Buduchnist Celebrates 20 years of Ukraine's Independence Day

BCU Foundation Inaugural Golf Tournament

BCU Foundation held their inaugural golf tournament on Tuesday August 9th at Dragon’s Fire golf club in Carlisle, Ontario to raise funds for the newly created fund "Hallmark of Excellence Fund". The fund promotes athletic excellence, sportsmanship, and fair play in a spirit of friendship, by supporting not-for-profit organizations that use sports to strengthen Ukrainian identity in Canada and around the world. The fund will also support Ukrainian-Canadian athletes who excel in various sports and who compete in Canada and internationally.

“She Paid the Ultimate Price” is a feature documentary, which chronicles a journey of discovery undertaken by Iryna Korpan to uncover the tragic fate of her grandmother in Western Ukraine during the Holocaust.

The true story about a Ukrainian woman— Kateryna Sikorska, a widow and mother of three small children, who saved her Jewish neighbors and subsequently fell victim to the Nazis. Her name is among the thousands of names forever engraved on the Wall of Righteous Among the Nations at Yad Vashem in Israel.

BCU Foundation and Buduchnist Credit Union are proud to be the Lead Sponsors of the Taras Shevchenko Monument in Ottawa, which was unveiled in our national’s capital on June 26, 2011.

Taras Shevchenko is a famous Ukrainian poet, artist and humanist. As the national hero of Ukraine, it was appropriate to unveil this monument in 2011, the 20th anniversary of Ukraine’s independence and the 120th anniversary of Ukrainian settlement in Canada.

This is the third Shevchenko monument to be erected in Canada.
World famous Canadian sculptor Leo Mol (Leonid Molodozhanyn) donated a series of four of his sculptures to stand as a unified monument to Taras Shevchenko.

Many guests from Ukraine and Canada were present at the unveiling of the monument.

Buduchnist Credit Union welcomed Vakhtang Kipiani, journalist, historian, and editor-in-chief of the Istorychna Pravda website on Tuesday June 28.

On June 28th, the Etobicoke-Mississauga branches of the League of Ukrainian Canadians and of Ukrainian Canadian Women hosted a screening of a documentary on the campaign of harassment launched by Ukrainian government officials against historian Roman Krutsyk, Head of the Kyiv-based Memorial Society. A question-and-answer session with guest speaker Mr. Kipiani and reception followed.

Mr. Kipiani discussed the state of the freedom of speech, freedom of press and the political climate in Ukraine. Mr. Kipiani familiarized himself with the work of the Ukrainian diaspora; since his arrival in Canada only last week he has already received new acquisitions to his newspaper collection which already exceeds 18,000 items.

Vice-President of the League of Ukrainian Canadian Women National Executive, Lesia Shymko, moderated the evening and presented Mr. Kipiani with a collection of films produced by the various diaspora organizations, as well as silver tryzub pendant from Buduchnist Credit Union.

Spring is time for Matura, a very beautiful Ukrainian tradition, a celebration of graduates. Matura is a graduation gala for all Ukrainian Saturday Heritage school program graduates of the Greater Toronto Area. Throughout the years these students have studied Ukrainian language, history, literature and traditions. Not only do students learn together but they make friends for life.

This year SUSK, The Ukrainian Canadian Students Union held their 53rd National Congress in Ottawa. Damian Snih, financial specialist, at Buduchnist Credit Union Ottawa branch, held a short seminar for the students regarding BCU Scholarships and Conquest Account (18‑25 years). Buduchnist was a Platinum sponsor of the Congress and also provided each student attendee with a USB memory stick.

The Pier 21 project, initiated by the League of Ukrainian Canadian Women, is to collect archival information about the post WWII third wave of immigration to Canada from Ukraine. The fundraising banquet “Celebrate Pier 21” held on April 30, 2011 was attended by many distinguished guests, Canadian politicians, community leaders and members of the Ukrainian Canadian community.

Chrysytna Bidiak, past president of the League of Ukrainian Canadian Women opened the evening’s festivities outlining the project.

Throughout the evening dancers, Barvinok School of Dance and the Desna Dance Company charmed attendees with their phenomenal dances.

The music of the Ukrainian Youth Association Youth Ensemble Prolisok, bandurist Borys Ostapienko, and Tenor Andrij Bilan created a magical atmosphere.

Guests were also entertained by the famous Ukrainian Canadian comedian, Luba Goy, who shared her experiences of passing through Pier 21.

The evenings festivities truly paid homage to all of those who came through Pier 21 and had an impact on our Ukrainian Canadian community.

25th anniversary commemoration of
the Chornobyl catastrophe

On April 16th 2011, the L.A. Olijnyk theatre group in Toronto under the direction of Larys Bajus and Halyna Czechowska, performed exerts from Kateryna Motyl’s novel «Політ журавлів над нетолоченими травами»

The moving performance gave a voice to the tragic events which unfolded during the catastrophic explosion of reactor number four in Chornobyl, Ukraine on April 26, 1986.

BCU Financial Group Seminar for MUSA

On March 26, 2011 Stefania Barrios, Manager of BCU’s Hamilton branch and William Kosyk, CFP, BCU Wealth Management, Investment Specialist, Qtrade Asset Management Mutual Funds  Representative hosted a seminar on savings, investments and debt handling strategies for the McMaster Ukrainian Students Association.

The aim of this seminar is to familiarize the participants with BCU Financial Group’s ability to meet all of their current and future financial needs. The seminar provided an opportunity to ask questions and exchange information and ideas. Another financial awareness seminar will take place in the fall of this year.

BCU welcomes Ivano-Frankivsk Theater Performers
to Canada

Buduchnist Foundation is one of the main sponsors of the Canadian tour of the Ivano-Frankivsk Theater.

The Theater actors are touring with a production of “Solodka Darusia”. This well-known play was written by the renowned Ukrainian playwright Maria Matios. The book “Solodka Darusia” has been translated into many  languages and performed more than 70 times over the past 2 years.  

Solodka Darusia will debut in Toronto on Saturday,  April 10, 2011 at the Ukrainian Cultural Centre at 83 Christie Street.

Congratulations to Rob Ford for winning the election!

Representatives of BCU have met with our new mayor to discuss issues of concern to our community during his campaign.

Mr. Ford outlined his “Saving Our City” platform, focusing on several key priorities which include downsizing city council, reducing the expense accounts of city councilors, and abolishing the Vehicle Registration Tax. Mr. Ford also noted that he was in favor of making the TTC an essential service and eliminating the Land Transfer Tax.

BCU launches 1st Annual Kenilworth Ave.                           "End of the Summer Clean-up Day" in Hamilton

The Hamilton branch of Buduchnist Credit Union organized the 1st Annual Kenilworth Av. End of the Summer Clean-up Day in Hamilton. The idea was to create a “neighbourly” welcoming feel along the street. Business owners were encouraged to take more care and responsibility for the facades of their store-front shops and to get to know other businesses in the area.

of Ivan Franko

Although he is only 4 months old, Danylo Glinnyj, is already a distinguished member of the Buduchnist family. Danylo is the great great great-grandson of the famous Ukrainian-born writer, Ivan Franko (1856 -1916).

A prolific poet, writer and political activist, Ivan Franko was the author of the celebrated children’s book “Lys Mykyta" ("Fox Mykyta"). It’s no wonder that the beloved figure of “Fox Mykyta” was chosen by Buduchnist to be the mascot of our popular Children’s Account.

BCU Foundation is proud supporter of the Sears National Kids Cancer Ride

BCU Foundation, a foundation of Buduchnist Credit Union and its members, is proud to announce its sponsorship support for the Sears National Kids Cancer Ride. BCU Foundation is the lead sponsor of Canadian cyclist and National Rider Ulana Kopystansky, who lost her 13 year-old daughter Taissa to cancer several years ago. BCU Foundation will make an initial donation of $5,000 for this wonderful cause and will further match future donations made by our members. Ulana is currently cycling from Vancouver to Halifax to raise awareness of and money for this important cause. We encourage everyone to visit our Head office on Bloor St. West during the Toronto Ukrainian Festival to make a contribution in support of this charitable endeavor.

The Ukrainian Canadian Art Foundation (KUMF Gallery) invites everybody to the 35th fall season exhibit "Enamel Fairy Tales", featuring the colourful enamel art and watercolours of Kyiv artist Yuliya Boroday.

The artist's works have been displayed in museums of Ukraine, Hungary, Spain and found in private collections in Ukraine, France, Germany, Canada and USA.

Buduchnist at Multicultural Festival in Burlington

Buduchnist CU was proud to be a gold sponsor of Tyrsa Ukrainian Dance School, at the Annual Multicultural Festival that took place at Bronte Park in Burlington. Students of the School, parents, friends, supporters and many  curious passers-by were gathered at the Tyrsa booth, where Tyrsa proudly displayed the Buduchnist Logo. The performance of the Tyrsa Dance School was a great hit and received long and loud applause from the audience.

BCU at Annual Golf Tournament in Hamilton

 

An Annual Golf Tournament was organized by the St. Vladimir Ukrainian Orthodox Cathedral in Hamilton.
Stefania Barrios, Manager of BCU's Hamilton branch represented Buduchnist CU which was one of sponsors at the event. She also enjoyed playing golf with players from the local community. Stefania said,
"We started the game in the rain, but by the time we arrived at the 16th hole, sponsored by BCU, the sun was shining".

Zolotyj Klen Festival rocks Ukrainian community

The 6th Annual Golden Maple Music Festival, known as “Zolotyj Klen”, welcomed huge crowds on Saturday, June 19th at the Ukrainian Youth Association recreational camp Veselka in Acton, Ontario. Buduchnist Credit Union was pleased to be one of the major sponsors of this wonderful event.

The perfect summer weather meant that more than a thousand visitors from across southern Ontario were in attendance for the all-day festivities. Adults, teens, and children enjoyed a full day of activities, including swimming, soccer competitions, a scrumptious all-day barbecue, imported Ukrainian beverages, specialty vendors, and exhibits. Those in attendance had the opportunity to win a number of fabulous prizes, including a BBQ, donated by Buduchnist CU.

                The Festival was a success thanks to volunteers of all ages.

         
      The youngest sports enthusiasts may have been exhausted after their game under the hot summer sun, but they were proud to be part of a great soccer competition.

The day's festivities included a musical program featuring the talents of young singers as well as contemporary bands.

The feature event was the evening performance by hip-hop band TMNK from Ukraine, who performed before an excited crowd of spectators. The band heard a roaring "Happy Birthday" from the crowd, as TMNK celebrated their 21st anniversary with their new Canadian fans. As a token of appreciation, the musicians received one-of-a-kind silver trident pendants courtesy of Buduchnist Credit Union. The fantastic evening ended with a marvelous display of fireworks.

Buduchnist CU was a gold sponsor of the Golden Maple Ukrainian-Canadian Music Festival known as “Zolotyj Klen”. One of Ukraine’s most popular bands, TNMK – Tanok na Majdani Kongo was the headliner at the Festival.

On May 29th 2010 there was an appreciation evening for all sponsors that were involved with the documentary film  “Vohon i zbroya”. The film is about the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA) in the Zakerzonnia region.

Buduchnist Credit Union was the main corporate sponsor of the production.

Initiating the production of the film were the League of Ukrainian Canadians, League of Ukrainian Canadian Women, Ukrainian Youth Association of Canada, Association of Ukrainians "Zakerzonnia", Lemko Association of Canada and the Society of Veterans of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA).

We are pleased to announce that Buduchnist Credit Union and BCU Foundation are the proud sponsors of the Ukrainian National Paralympic Team, whose members arrived in Vancouver this week.

The Paralympic Games, modeled on the Olympic Games, is an international sport event for world-class athletes living with a disability. Having overcome great physical challenges, these young athletes from Ukraine will be competing in the Paralympic Winter Games, which include such sports as Alpine Skiing, Biathlon, Cross-country Skiing, Ice Sledge Hockey, among others.

The Paralympic Winter Games Opening Ceremony will take place at Vancouver’s BC Place on March 12, 2010. The Closing Ceremony will be held on March 21, 2010 in Whistler at Whistler Medals Plaza.

Buduchnist Credit Union and BCU Foundation welcome these spirited young athletes and wish them great success in their pursuit of gold medals.

Buduchnist Mascot-a Hit with Kids!

This past week, Lys Mykyta, the Buduchnist Children’s Account mascot, visited the annual graduation of the Sonechko kindergarten. During this fun celebration supervised by the school’s Director, Anna Gavris, kids had the opportunity to sing, dance, and show-off their talents. The highlight of the event was the appearance of Lys Mykyta, whose surprise arrival had been kept a secret. The audience of children and parents sprang to their feet with excitement when Lys Mykyta arrived, entertaining the crowd and handing out gifts and sweets to all in attendance.

On March 29, 2009 the Tyrsa Ukrainian Dance School in Burlington held a Bingo event, which was attended by Buduchnist - Hamilton Branch staff.
This event included the unveiling of a new Tyrsa banner.
Buduchnist Credit Union donated funds to cover the cost of this banner.

Meeting with students from Ukrainian Students' Club at McMaster University

In February of 2009, Hamilton Branch Manager, Stefania Barrios, had the opportunity to meet with students from the McMaster University Ukrainian Students’ Club to make a presentation about BCU and the advantages of becoming a member. The presentation focused on the value of membership, and the personal professional service available to them.

Students showed a genuine interest in BCU and commented on BCU’s community involvement. They expressed interest in meeting for another session focusing on Debt Management.

Students will quickly learn that BCU has a wide range of services to address members’ borrowing, planning and consolidation needs, allowing for good decision-making and  piece of mind.

Film " UPA on Zakerzonni"

A new documentary film about the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA) in the Zakerzonnia region, "Vohon' i zbroya",  premiered on Sunday, May 25 at Toronto's Ukrainian Cultural Centre.  Buduchnist Credit Union was the main corporate sponsor of the production.

Initiating the production of the film were the League of Ukrainian Canadians, League of Ukrainian Canadian Women, Ukrainian Youth Association of Canada, Association of Ukrainians "Zakerzonnia", Lemko Association of Canada and the Society of Veterans of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA).

The film was written and produced by Myroslav Ivanyk.

The documentary depicts the heroic struggle of UPA in the Zakerzonnia region with the goal of ensuring that history is documented for future generations.

BCU Foundation sponsors Holodomor exhibit

BCU Foundation is the main sponsor of the exhibit Holodomor: Genocide by Famine produced by the League of Ukrainian Canadians. The exhibit was launched on Friday, April 18 at Toronto's City Hall where it will be on display through April 26.

In conjunction with the launch, the International Holodomor Remembrance Flame arrived in Canada. The Remembrance Flame, which will travel to 33 countries to raise Holodomor awareness, was accepted in Canada by Dr. Ihor Ostash, Ukraine's Ambassador to Canada, and UCC president Mr. Paul Grod.

On the initiative of the Ukrainian Canadian Congress, the Flame will visit 16 Canadian cities escorted by Holodomor survivor Mr. Stefan Horlatsch.

Ottawa community commemorates the Holodomor

Buduchnist Credit Union invited the Ottawa community to an evening commemorating the 75th anniversary of the Holodomor

The program featured presentations about the Holodomor commemorations and planned activities in Canada throughout 2008.

Halyna Vynnyk, BCU Foundation Executive Director, presented the community projects funded by the Foundation since its launch in 2006. The Foundation's Yurij Skripchinski Holodomor Education Fund has been a major contributor to Holodomor awareness and education initiatives.

A donation was presented to BCU Foundation from St. John the Baptist Ukrainian School specifically for the Holodomor Fund. The cheque was presented by school director Luba Burij-Patterson and past director Oksana Rennie.
