Education

RESP - Registered Educational Savings Plans

A Registered Education Savings Plan is a government approved plan which allows you to save for your child's education by allowing investments to grow tax-free until your child is ready to attend a post-secondary institution. At that time, any investments or part thereof may be withdrawn and any interest will be taxed based on the child's current income and personal tax rate. Parents or grandparents can open a RESP for a child.

Effective June 22, 2007, the RESP Annual Limit of $4,000 was eliminated and the maximum Lifetime Limit was increased to $50,000 for 2007 and subsequent taxation years.

The Canada Education Savings Grant (CESG) program adds further incentives to contribute to a RESP. The federal government will contribute an additional 20% annually per child on the first $2,500 deposited into a RESP. You may also  be eligible for an additional 20% grant  on the first $500 RESP contribution depending on your family's net income.

If your child was born on or after January 1, 2004, your child could qualify to receive the Canada Learning Bond (CLB).  Eligibility for additional CESGs and CLBs is determined by the family's net income and entitlement to the National Child Benefit (NCB) supplement.  Please note that some restrictions apply for RESP beneficiaries ages 16 and 17.

Investment options for RESPs include: term deposits, GICs, daily interest savings, mutual funds*. Regular automatic contributions are also an easy way of building your child's RESP.

At Buduchnist Credit Union your deposits are insured by the Deposit Insurance Corporation of Ontario to a total of $100,000 for non-registered accounts and up to $100,000 for each RESP contract. For more information visit the DICO web site at www.dico.com.

For more information on RESPs contact a Financial Services Officer.

Retirement

RRSP - Registered Retirement Savings Plan

Saving for your future is one of the most important investments you will make during your lifetime. RRSPs help you take advantage of tax incentives while building a nest egg for retirement. At Buduchnist, we'll help you customize a strategy designed to help you achieve your retirement goals.

You can contribute a maximum of either 18% of your earned income or $19,000 less pension adjustments for 2007 to a RRSP. To find out how much you can contribute check your Notice of Assessment from last year's tax return to see how much you can contribute. You can also carry forward indefinitely any unused contributions from 1991. Catching up on unused contributions from previous years is made easier by taking advantage of a RRSP Loan.

By contributing as early as possible, you can also benefit from the longer effects of compound interest. Regular monthly deposits make contributing to your RRSP so much easier by eliminating the need for lump sum contributions by the annual deadline within the first 60 days of the year.

To make the most of your investments and reduce your risk consider a well diversified portfolio. BCU offers a full range of investment products to meet your retirement goals.

For more information on retirement plans contact a Financial Services Officer.

RRIF - Registered Retirement Income Fund

A RRIF is a popular option available for drawing income from your registered retirement plan. Instead of cashing in your RRSP and incurring a large tax burden, RRSPs can be converted to an RRIF which allows a gradual withdrawal of the funds over time.

Converting your RRSP to a RRIF can be done at any age. The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA), however, requires that you make this conversion by the end of the calendar year in which you turn 71 years of age. With your money in a Buduchnist RRIF, you can continue to control your investments. Within the guidelines set out by CRA, you can determine the level of income you wish to receive - and change it periodically if you wish. You pay tax on income as you receive it, and the remaining balance within your RRIF continues to generate tax-free interest until it is withdrawn.

Any investments, be they GICs, mutual funds*, or individual securities may be eligible for a transfer from your RRSP holdings to a new RRIF.

Contact a Financial Services Officer for more details.

Life Income Fund (LIF) and Locked-In Retirement Income Fund (LRIF)

A Life Income Fund and a Lock-In Retirement Income Fund are personal retirement income funds. You can open these types of funds with the money transferred out of your company pension plan when you leave your employer or retire. LIFs and LRIFs offer you a regular income stream which is taxable as it is withdrawn. Both have rules about minimum and maximum withdrawals.

Contact a Financial Services Officer for more details.

Estate planning

Estate planning is an essential part of a complete financial plan. It involves more than just writing your will. An estate plan sets out the distribution of your assets according to your wishes and with the greatest possible benefit for your beneficiaries.

Why is estate planning important?

An estate plan:

  • preserves your wealth
  • puts you in control of the distribution of your wealth
  • ensures that your wishes are fulfilled
  • minimizes taxes

What does an estate plan involve?

  • transferring assets to your beneficiaries in a timely manner
  • looking after the people and causes you care about
  • reducing estate administration costs
  • adopting strategies for minimizing taxes
  • protecting yourself, your beneficiaries and your assets with life insurance
  • power of attorney
  • valid and current will

It's never too early or too late to prepare an estate plan. BCU's Wealth Management Department can help. Together, we'll review your individual priorities and available options. We will then design a comprehensive estate plan to meet your goals and provide for your beneficiaries efficiently and tax-effectively.
