Tax- Free Savings Account (TFSA)

The Federal Government recently introduced a new registered savings account called the Tax-Free Savings Account (TFSA). The TFSA will allow Canadians to earn investment income tax free. Although the new account comes into effect January 1, 2009, you can pre-register by contacting your Financial Services Officer.

The individual owning the TFSA is the 'Holder'. Any individual person ( not trusts or corporations) who meets all of the following three requirements is eligible to open a TFSA:

- Resident in Canada, and
- 18 years of age or older, and
- Holds a valid Social Insurance Number (SIN).

Contributions to TFSAs may only be made by the Holder and the amount is not tied to the income of the Holder.

$5000 is the maximum TFSA contribution limit for each year beginning in 2009. The growth on your investment within a TFSA will not be taxed even when withdrawn from the plan. You can set up your TFSA in a number of different investment options, withdraw your funds at any time and for any purpose.

For more information on Tax-Free Savings Accounts, visit the Canada Revenue Agency website or contact your Buduchnist Financial Services Officer.

Education

RESP - Registered Educational Savings Plans

A Registered Education Savings Plan is a government approved plan which allows you to save for your child's education by allowing investments to grow tax-free until your child is ready to attend a post-secondary institution. At that time, any investments or part thereof may be withdrawn and any interest will be taxed based on the child's current income and personal tax rate. Parents or grandparents can open a RESP for a child.

All contributions made by one or more subscribes into RESPs for a particular beneficiary may not exceed $50,000 during the beneficiary's lifetime.

The Canada Education Savings Grant (CESG) is grant from the Government of Canada paid directly into a beneficiary's RESP. Every Canadian resident under age 18 will accumulate CESG contribution room of $2,500 per year. Unused CESG contribution room can be carried forward for use in a future year. CESG is calculated as 20% on the contribution amount each year, to a maximum of $500 per year. The maximum lifetime CESG payable to a beneficiary is $7,200.

Additional CESG
Additional CESG rates may apply to the first $500 contributed in a year to a child's RESP. Based on the 2008 income brackets, the 20% matching rate will be increased to 40% for families with income of up to $37,885 and to 30% for a families with income between $37,885 and $75,769.

Canada Learning Bond (CLB)
Children born on or after January1,2004 are eligible for a $500 CLB, provided their families are entitled to the National Child Benefit (NCB) supplement. These children will also qualify for $100 CLB installments until age 15 in each year their families are entitled to the NCB supplement. Children who are not eligible to the CLB at birth, but become entitled to the NCB supplement in a subsequent year, will qualify at that time for a $500 CLB and will qualify for the $100 annual CLB installment in each year thereafter that their family is entitled to the NCB supplement.

Investment options for RESPs include: term deposits, GICs, daily interest savings, mutual funds*. Regular automatic contributions are also an easy way of building your child's RESP.

At Buduchnist Credit Union your deposits are insured by the Deposit Insurance Corporation of Ontario to a total of $100,000 for non-registered accounts and up to $100,000 for each RESP contract. For more information visit the DICO web site at www.dico.com.

Retirement

RRSP - Registered Retirement Savings Plan

Saving for your future is one of the most important investments you will make during your lifetime. RRSPs help you take advantage of tax incentives while building a nest egg for retirement. At Buduchnist, we'll help you customize a strategy designed to help you achieve your retirement goals.

You can contribute a maximum of either 18% of your earned income or $19,000 less pension adjustments for 2007 to a RRSP. To find out how much you can contribute check your Notice of Assessment from last year's tax return to see how much you can contribute. You can also carry forward indefinitely any unused contributions from 1991. Catching up on unused contributions from previous years is made easier by taking advantage of a RRSP Loan.

By contributing as early as possible, you can also benefit from the longer effects of compound interest. Regular monthly deposits make contributing to your RRSP so much easier by eliminating the need for lump sum contributions by the annual deadline within the first 60 days of the year.

To make the most of your investments and reduce your risk consider a well diversified portfolio. BCU offers a full range of investment products to meet your retirement goals.

For more information on retirement plans contact a Financial Services Officer.

RRIF - Registered Retirement Income Fund

A RRIF is a popular option available for drawing income from your registered retirement plan. Instead of cashing in your RRSP and incurring a large tax burden, RRSPs can be converted to an RRIF which allows a gradual withdrawal of the funds over time.

Converting your RRSP to a RRIF can be done at any age. The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA), however, requires that you make this conversion by the end of the calendar year in which you turn 71 years of age. With your money in a Buduchnist RRIF, you can continue to control your investments. Within the guidelines set out by CRA, you can determine the level of income you wish to receive - and change it periodically if you wish. You pay tax on income as you receive it, and the remaining balance within your RRIF continues to generate tax-free interest until it is withdrawn.

Any investments, be they GICs, mutual funds*, or individual securities may be eligible for a transfer from your RRSP holdings to a new RRIF.

Contact a Financial Services Officer for more details.

Life Income Fund (LIF) and Locked-In Retirement Income Fund (LRIF)

A Life Income Fund and a Lock-In Retirement Income Fund are personal retirement income funds. You can open these types of funds with the money transferred out of your company pension plan when you leave your employer or retire. LIFs and LRIFs offer you a regular income stream which is taxable as it is withdrawn. Both have rules about minimum and maximum withdrawals.

Contact a Financial Services Officer for more details.

Estate planning

Estate planning is an essential part of a complete financial plan. It involves more than just writing your will. An estate plan sets out the distribution of your assets according to your wishes and with the greatest possible benefit for your beneficiaries.

Why is estate planning important?

An estate plan:

  • preserves your wealth
  • puts you in control of the distribution of your wealth
  • ensures that your wishes are fulfilled
  • minimizes taxes

What does an estate plan involve?

  • transferring assets to your beneficiaries in a timely manner
  • looking after the people and causes you care about
  • reducing estate administration costs
  • adopting strategies for minimizing taxes
  • protecting yourself, your beneficiaries and your assets with life insurance
  • power of attorney
  • valid and current will

It's never too early or too late to prepare an estate plan. BCU's Wealth Management Department can help. Together, we'll review your individual priorities and available options. We will then design a comprehensive estate plan to meet your goals and provide for your beneficiaries efficiently and tax-effectively.
